4 of the most well-known grappling arts in the world

Here are four of the most popular submission grappling arts in no particular order:

  1. Sambo: Sambo is a highly effective combat sport and martial art form that started in Russia. The whole focus of Sambo is to effectively defend oneself without the use of weapons. Some of the top MMA fighters in the world have extensive backgrounds in Sambo including Fedor Emilianenko and Khabib Nurmagomedov. This fighting style includes an arsenal of leg locks and takedowns that'll quickly neutralize an untrained attacker.
  2. Judo: This martial art form started in Japan and has since spread around the world thanks to its effectiveness and exposure on a global scale since it is an Olympic Sport. Judo's full-contact approach focuses heavily on takedowns such as hip throws in order to submit an opponent with moves such as armbars and chokes.
  3. Wrestling: While it may not be a style that necessarily teaches its practitioners to finish fights, wrestling teaches fighters how to take fights to the ground and pin their opponents. Wrestlers often have great control of their hips which allows them to keep their balance and keep a fighter standing if needed.
  4. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: As one of the most popular grappling arts in the world, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu incorporates many different takedowns as well as submissions. BJJ practitioners also learn how to get out of less dominant positions with sweeps and escapes. They're different wrestlers since they can fighter off of their backs when they have to.
